St Luke’s has a varied and vibrant musical life both within and outside regular services.
The church has a four-part adult choir who sing for special services, and a junior choir, affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music, who lead the worship each Sunday morning.
St Luke’s Director of Music, Alison Morse, trained at the Royal Academy of Music. She encourages and enables many local people, often with no prior musical experience, to enjoy singing to a high standard. The adult choir’s repertoire ranges from Tallis to Townend. They also contribute to city events, such as the 2006 York Community Carol Concert at the Barbican Centre.
The church also has a talented music group made up of piano, guitar and drums, with occasionally violin or flute. This ensemble leads the more modern songs to ensure that our worship reaches out to all tastes.
The Sunnydene Players, St Luke’s own music and drama company, rehearse and perform a musical show at church annually. This riot of fun and costumes is a sell-out every year. St Luke’s has also provided many successful productions for the York Mystery Plays.
The Music Fund has been set up to support the musical life of St Luke’s church which serves the parish around Burton Stone Lane in York. Music is an essential part of both our worship of God and our outreach to the world around us, and therefore a key element of a vibrant, living community.
The first priority of the fund is to finance the restoration of the organ, which is likely to need around £37,000. We aim to raise £40,000 to cater for any unexpected costs, and to provide a surplus to help with the cost of music for the choirs, instruments for the music group, and any other support that music at St Luke’s may need.

The organ was built in 1880 by H J Nelson for the Methodist Church in Stockton upon Tees. In 1959 it was moved to the south side of the choir at St Luke’s.
The opening recital was given by Dr Francis Jackson, a famous name in church music, and then Master of the Music at York Minster. Today it is in use every Sunday for services, as well as weddings, baptisms and funerals. It is played by a number of local organists for practice and pleasure, and is introduced to children from the neighbouring schools on trips each year. Although well maintained over the years, it is now in need of more extensive restoration, including stripping the instrument down and restoring the pipes, as well as possibly adding an extra stop in the lower register to add balance.
Genuine mechanical-action pipe organs are increasingly rare. Restoring St Luke’s organ will keep a valuable instrument available to local musicians, as well as respecting the money and effort that previous generations have put into maintaining it.
The organ has set the scene for St Luke’s weekly worship for nearly half a century. It has accompanied times of thanksgiving, celebration and joy in the lives of many, and it has been a source of strength to those who mourn. Let us ensure we pass it on in good heart.
