Ouch!HOT POTATOES!

This year we begin Lent, the season of preparation for commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus, with a 7.00pm service of Holy Communion in church on Ash Wednesday, 22nd February.

For those who wish, there will be the opportunity for 'ashing' - to be marked with a cross of ash on your forehead as a reminder of our own mortality and dependence on God as we begin our journey through Lent.

At 7.30pm on each of the next five Wednesdays we'll be meeting to look at some of the 'Hot Potatoes' that face the world we live in, and which challenge us as Christians in particular to act as well as to pray.

  • 29 February: Jennifer Locke of York Street Angels - how can we minister to those whose only goal is pursuing pleasure, when it so often brings the opposite?

  • 7th March: Steve Redman, Minister of The Ark church in York - how can we best serve those whose lives are approaching their end, and how can we show them true mercy?

  • 14th March: Elaine Hill, St Luke's member - how can we rise to the challenge of human trafficking - people whose helplessness may be invisible in our midst?

  • 21st March: Revd Fran Wakefield, former Prison Chaplain - how do we minister within a system of punishment for serious crimes?

  • 28th March: Revd Paul Wordsworth, co-founder of York's Arclight homeless shelter - How Blessed are the Poor?

After each speaker we'll be exploring our own responses to the issues they highlight, asking what light the Christian faith, scriptures and church have to shed, and what practical things we might be able to do ourselves.

Everyone is welcome, and we'll try to make you think!
