Creation on the Lane: St Luke's Arts Festival 2011

Creation was what the first-ever St Luke’s Church Arts Festival set out to celebrate in July, and it was a story that started with God creating the world and went on to celebrate the creativity of people here in our own part of it.

The Garden of Eden - by St Luke's ExplorersSuddenly the church and the hall next door were filled with feast of talent; things to look at, to feel, to read, to hear and even to eat.

And it didn’t stop there - creating stuff is a hands-on business, so you could try your hand at weaving, embroidering, making pictures with encaustic wax (did you know you can be an artist with an iron?) and more.

The photo competition brought in a flood of colour, and judges Lewis Outing and Dave Brown (Headteacher, Clifton Green School) had their work cut out, but in the end the prize went to David Rushton’s fantastic shot of a crowd of grinning African children staring out of a doorway in a wall with a really off-the-wall painting on it.Photo display and competition

St Luke’s Sunday worship on the 17th was surrounded by paintings and costumes, models and sculptures, portraits and handiwork by old and young alike.

Contributions came from local schools and the church’s own youth groups; from sheltered housing and from neighbouring churches.

As ever, an army of helpers made it all possible, from the earliest planning in the depths of winter to the week of hard work to make it all come together, and just being around to make it work on the day.Worship in the midst of Creation

Creation indeed – so much to celebrate.
